The Port of Hay Point is situated about
38 kilometres south of Mackay and is
one of the largest export coal ports in
the world.
The Port of Hay Point’s total throughput
of coal in 2003-04 represents over
10 per cent of the global seaborne coal
export market.

Hay Point comprises two separate coal export terminals:
• Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCT), privately leased from the Queensland
Government by Prime Infrastructure
• Hay Point Services Coal Terminal, owned and operated by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi
Alliance (BMA).

The two terminals are linked to the Bowen Basin mines of central Queensland through an
integrated rail-port network.
Prime Infrastructure has developed a master plan that forms the basis for future expansion
of DBCT and already covers expansion of the nominal capacity to 74 Mtpa.
Both terminals have:
• purpose-built rail in-loading facilities
• on-shore stockpile yards
• offshore wharves serviced by conveyor systems.
