MAJOR PORTS ...handling coal and mineral commodities
The Port of Abbot Point facilitates the overseas shipment of coking and steaming coal to ports
in Europe and Asia. Trains from Newlands and Collinsville mines have a coal carrying capacity
of up to 4700 tonnes, which is stockpiled through a bottom dump train receival system using
rail mounted stacker/reclaimers capable of handling 4000 tonnes per hour (tph).
Feasibility, design and approval works valued at $25 million, for a 78 kilometre (km) rail
line linking the Goonyella and Newlands coal system and the expansion of the Abbot
Point Coal Terminal has recently been endorsed by the Queensland Government. If mining
companies commit to using the proposed facilities these government initiatives will allow
the construction to be fast-tracked to meet any future coal demand.
