Sandstone of the Woogaroo Sub Group is overlain by basalt lavas of the Main Range Volcanics. The sandstone wass deeply weathering 
during the Tertiary period producing a soft, friable and easily excavated sandy material.
The sandstone is fine to coarse grained, with some variation between different beds.
