Geology
Baralaba Coal Measures of Late Permian age dipping at 5 to 12
degrees to the west. Up to 7 seams & seam splits are present, of
which 5 are worked: Seam A - 4.2m; Seam B - 3.6m; Seam C - 3.4m;
Seam D - 3.2m; & Seam E - 2.1m.
Mining Method Open-cut using draglines and a prestrip fleet for overburden removal.
Baralaba
Transport
179 km by rail to the port of Gladstone.
Preparation plant The coal preparation plant uses a dense medium bath, and dense
medium cyclones, spirals and froth flotation.

low ash thermal coal.
Comments
The current Moura joint venture was established in July 2002, following Mitsui's pre-emptive rights purchase from Coal and Allied of
its 55% interest in the mining operation. Anglo Coal acquired a 51% share of the mine following agreement with Mitsui on an
exchange in equity in other coal mining projects. Since 1996 Moura has been commercially extracting coal med methane, which is
piped into the State gas pipeline, enabling Moura to utilise its underground coal resources. In December 2004, the Moura joint
venture partners (Anglo American plc and Mitsui & Co., Ltd of Japan) announced plans for a total recapitalisation of the existing
Moura Mine and for the development of two new mining operations to the north and south of the existing mine. Collectively this
group of operations is to be called the Dawson Complex and is to be developed over the two to three years for an estimated capital
cost of around US$ 600 million (more than A$750 million). When completed, the complex will consist of three separate mining areas
linked to a central coal preparation plant and handling facility. These separate mining areas which extend over a strike length in
excess of 100 km are now being referred to as Dawson North (proposed as a newly developed area north of the existing open-cut
mine area), Dawson Central (comprising the area of the existing open-cut operations) and Dawson South an area to be developed in
three stages south of the existing Moura mine area containing what were previously referred to as the Theodore North and Theodore
South coal deposits). The current redevelopment plans to increase production from the Dawson complex do not include the
resources south of Theodore township. This area, formerly known as Theodore South, is now termed the Dawson South Stage 3
project and is to be developed in the longer term.
