Geology
Tarong Beds of Late Triassic age with dips normally up to 5 degrees
to the south southeast though local variations due to faulting & seam
splitting are common. Up to 15 seams are present: Ace - very limited;
King - 9.8m; Seams A to J (previously the Queen & Joker seam
groups) with a typical aggregate coal thickness of about 28m; Prince,
Baron and Duke. Only the King & Seams A to J are currently mined.
The bulk of the mine has no Tertiary cover except for a small area on
the eastern side where deep pre-Tertiary erosion & infill down to
140m has occurred.
Mining Method Open-cut using one dragline for overburden removal.

Comments
The Meandu mine was developed to supply coal to the Tarong power station, The mine has a contract with the power station
operator, Tarong Energy Corporation Ltd, for coal supply to the existing 1400MW power station, and to the adjacent 450MW Tarong
North station which commenced operating in early 2003.
